1) Continue to build on the relationship with the Universities here in Houston. The Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at UH(which I am happily an alumnus Class of '08) is ranked #2 in the country. While the original post mentioned Computer Science, equally important is the dedication towards the Business Schools. A growing Houston tech industry will need forward-thinking, entrepreneurial, driven graduates to start these firms and/or help the CS majors grow them.

2) Create a catchy Houston slogan. It's all about marketing. If Austin has "Keep Austin Weird," Houston needs an equally catchy slogan us Houstonians can use as a battle-cry that not only represents our uniqueness and individuality as a city, but shows how forward-thinking, diverse, and entrepreneurial we are.

I know I sound like a broken record on this, but the institutions in the Texas Medical Center really need to integrate entrepreneurship into their cultures. When you compare the amount of research money that comes into Houston institutions to other areas, we should have a lot more biotech startups than we do. The dearth of entrepreneurship is the fault of the TMC institutions. Somebody needs to communicate to the leaders in the TMC that they need to make technology commercialization a priority.

I think we could improve our startup scene in Houston, similar to what Israel has done with Tel Aviv and this really needs to be pushed by both local government and the private sector in Houston that is flush with cash.

...foster an environment that promotes entrepreneurs and this is no easy task but countries like Israel (with only 6-7 million people) are doing this because they either foster creativity to spur the Service Revolution or they face the obvious. Imagine if we had this type of motivation (or necessity for survival) in Houston.

More details on my (Felipe Villasenor) post here:

call me if you have any questions.
